We bought her in August 2002. She had been sitting
in someone’s front yard for about 8 months and they wanted to get rid
of her. We auto carried her down to PE and getting bored waiting
for her to arrive on her specified day we went for a drive to see if
we could see the auto carrier, we did, for a blink of an eye, I somehow
think that the driver was not that impressed with our grey rusted bakkie
on his truck, compared to his usual load of shiny new cars, so he was
making sure no-one actually had a chance to see the load he was carrying. Update 2006 Sad end as she was the flagship of our rusted fleet, this site is named after her, Moby as she was big and grey, 302 because that was the size of the engine, - the domain Moby on its own was already taken. Her engine is now in the XA Ranchero. |

|
We bought the red ranchero as voetstoots* (in computer language - wysiwyg)
as spare parts for Moby. The weeds were growing up and out of
the engine and when she was towed out she took half the garden with
her. My husband got her going, again using a coke bottle as a
petrol tank and she was mainly used for towing other rusted specimens
around the garden. The Inline 6 engine is incredibly powerful,
far more so than the 302 V8, but we did have to upgrade the 'petrol
tank' from a 500ml bottle to a 2 litre one. Even though she ran her body was more body putty than actual metal, if you ran a magnet around the body it did not really stick to any part. The wiring was non existent except for basic running and the interior was a disaster. She ended up going to the same home as Moby, although the engine remains in our garage, along with all the other orphan engines. * Voetstoots = as is. Her performance around the garden pulling out other cars brought me to the conclusion that if its sheer brute force that you want in a vehicle, then the inline 6 is the engine to get. |

| General Information | ||
| South African Ranchero's are NOT the same as American Ranchero's, they were sent to South Africa in CKD form from Australia, they are in fact XW and XY Falcon utes, but badged as Ranchero's here for whatever reason. As far as I know we never got the XT Falcon. To further complicate matters, Falcon cars were not called Falcons in SA, they were called Fairmont's. So a South African book will refer to the 71 Ranchero as being based on the 71 Fairmont and so on. |
